Building forms

The editor. Questions, sections, media, and how a form is put together.

The editor

A form is a list of sections, each containing questions. Add question drops a new short-answer question into the section, and the type dropdown on the question itself changes it to any of the nineteen types. The toolbox also adds a title and description block, an image, a video, or another section. Dragging is for reordering: every question carries a handle that moves it up or down within its section. Changes save automatically, the indicator next to the form title shows when a save is in flight and when it has landed.

Question types

TextShort answer, paragraph, code editor
ChoiceMultiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown
Scales & gridsLinear scale, range slider, multiple-choice grid, tick-box grid
Ranking & allocationPriority matrix, budget allocator
Date & timeDate, time
Media & filesFile upload, image hotspot, sketch pad, audio recorder

Alongside the questions, the toolbox adds three elements that collect nothing: a title and description block, an image, and a video. A new section carries its own title.

Every question can carry a title, a description, and a required flag. Choice questions can use images as options.

Sections

Sections split a form into pages. Respondents move through them one at a time, which keeps long forms manageable and is what makes branching possible. See Conditional logic.

Images and video in questions

Any question can carry an image, and there is a dedicated video question type for embedding a clip. Images you place in a form yourself count as form assets rather than respondent uploads, so they work on the Free plan (up to 50 MB) even though respondent file uploads do not.

File uploads

The file-upload question lets respondents attach files. It is a paid-plan feature: on the Free plan the question can be added and kept, but its upload settings are read-only and respondents are told up front that the form is not accepting uploads.

On paid plans the limits are 25 MB per file, with 2 GB of total storage on Standard and 5 GB on Teams.

How the form is presented

A form has two renderer modes, set in its settings:

  • Default: every question on the section’s page, scrolled through as one page per section.
  • Slideshow: one question at a time, with vertical navigation between them. Branching still works the same way.

Alongside it:

  • Show progress bar: a bar tracking how far through the form the respondent is.
  • Shuffle question order: randomises the order questions appear in, per respondent.
  • Background colour and background image: per form, uploaded or fetched from a URL.

What respondents may do

Three per-form switches, all off unless you turn them on:

  • Edit after submit: the respondent can go back and change their answers after submitting.
  • See summary charts after submitting: publishes an aggregated summary of the responses so far. Anyone with the form link can read it; only closed-set answers are counted, never open text, uploads or drawings. See Response summaries.
  • Email themselves a copy: the respondent can have their own answers sent to the address they gave.

You also write the confirmation message shown after submitting, and can offer a link to submit another response.

Previewing

Preview opens the form exactly as a respondent sees it, without recording anything.

Opening and closing a form

A switch at the top of the form settings enables or disables it. A disabled form stays in place and keeps its responses, but stops accepting new ones, anyone opening the link sees a closing message you can write yourself.
